Calcutta, once the glittering epi-centre of the British Empire. Who could imagine that the curious blend of Eastern and quintessentially English customs could marry so well to form long lasting traditions now effortlessly woven into the Calcutta’s intrinsic culture. Lazy late afternoon lawn parties, with peppered cucumber sandwiches and samosas… Rolls Royce’s and Ambassador’s the vehicle of choice for sari wearing gentry… and an abundance of displaced regal architecture that looks like it has fallen straight out of the sky from its home in South Kensington!

Here are a series of 40 images taken of Calcutta in 1947 by the US Army.
